Somewhere around your first early scan, if you go looking online, you’ll bump into the Ramzi theory — the idea that a grainy 6-week ultrasound already knows whether you’re having a boy or a girl. The claim is seductively specific: look at which side the developing placenta is sitting on, and you’ve got your answer months before the anatomy scan. It has spawned countless forum threads, “read my scan” requests, and confident predictions from strangers on the internet. It’s a fun rabbit hole to fall down. But before you repaint the nursery, it’s worth understanding exactly what the theory says, why it isn’t reliable, and what actually does give you a real answer.

What the Ramzi theory actually claims

The Ramzi theory (sometimes called the Ramzi method) says that as early as 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy, the location of the chorionic villi — the tissue that becomes the placenta — reveals the baby’s sex. The rule of thumb goes like this: if the placenta or chorionic villi appear on the mother’s right side, it’s a boy; if they appear on the left side, it’s a girl.

That’s the whole pitch. No blood test, no waiting for the baby to be big enough to see anatomy — just a glance at which side the future placenta is forming on. Because it promises an answer so much earlier than conventional methods, it spread quickly and picked up a devoted following. The appeal is obvious: who wouldn’t want a peek months ahead of schedule?

The problem is that appeal and accuracy are two very different things.

Why it isn’t scientifically validated

The honest answer is that the Ramzi theory is not supported by peer-reviewed evidence. There’s no independently replicated, published research that establishes a reliable link between placenta position and fetal sex. It circulates as folklore dressed up in ultrasound vocabulary — which can make it sound more authoritative than the ring-on-a-string trick or the old wives’ tales you may have already been told, but it lands in the same place: a coin flip.

Major medical organizations don’t recognize placenta location as a sex predictor. The methods that clinicians actually rely on — described by the NHS, ACOG, and Mayo Clinic — are blood-based genetic screening and the detailed anatomy scan. Placenta side isn’t on that list, and there’s a good structural reason why.

The image-orientation problem

Even setting aside the lack of evidence, there’s a practical flaw that sinks casual Ramzi predictions: you often can’t tell which way the image is oriented.

Ultrasound images are not photographs with a fixed left and right. How an image displays depends on the machine’s settings, the angle of the probe, and — crucially — whether the scan was done transabdominally (over the belly) or transvaginally (internally). These two approaches can effectively flip the image left-to-right. A placenta that looks like it’s on the “right” in one orientation is on the “left” in another.

So when someone glances at a screenshot and confidently calls “boy,” they usually have no idea whether the image is mirrored. Sonographers know the orientation because they set up the scan and read the on-screen markers — but a stranger interpreting a cropped photo online almost never does. Guess wrong about the mirroring and you’ve inverted the entire prediction. That single ambiguity is enough to turn the whole thing into chance, no matter how carefully you count sides.

It’s a bit like being told a treasure map works perfectly — but half the maps are printed backwards and nobody tells you which half you’re holding.

What actually predicts your baby’s sex

When you want a real answer instead of a fun guess, the reliable methods are medical, and they arrive a little later than the Ramzi theory promises. NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing / cfDNA). This is a simple maternal blood test available from around 10 weeks. It analyzes fragments of the baby’s DNA circulating in your blood, mainly to screen for chromosomal conditions — and because it detects sex chromosomes, it can also reveal the baby’s sex early and accurately. It’s a screening test, so your provider is the right person to explain the results.

The anatomy ultrasound. Often called the mid-pregnancy or 20-week scan, this detailed ultrasound is typically done around 18 to 20 weeks. Its main job is checking the baby’s development and anatomy, but the sonographer can usually identify the sex too — as long as the baby is positioned cooperatively, which isn’t guaranteed.

Diagnostic tests done for medical reasons. Procedures like amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling examine the baby’s actual chromosomes and can determine sex with near-certainty. These are offered for genetic reasons, not curiosity, and come with considerations you’d discuss carefully with your care team.

The bottom line

The Ramzi theory is a genuinely fun piece of pregnancy lore. If you want to squint at your 7-week scan, pick a side, and make a playful prediction, go right ahead — screenshot it and see if it turns out “right.” Just hold the result loosely. There’s no solid science behind it, and the image-orientation problem alone means even a careful reading is really a 50/50 guess in disguise.
